Editor-Approved Tips For Making These Major Fall Trends Your Own

by Erin Cunningham

This fall, it’s time to own the gray area — literally. Often overlooked for a more moody black or creamy ecru, the middle ground between these colors actually offers a fresher take on monochromatic dressing. But don’t let head-to-toe gray feel intimidating. Instead, think of it as a modern approach to minimalism. With a focus on varying shades and textures, the resulting looks take everything you know about wearing neutrals and turn it upside down. Because if you ever thought wearing just one color meant playing it safe, it’s time to think again.

With Macy’s as our go-to personal style source, we’re approaching fall’s grayscale trend for all aspects of our lives, from clothing to home. TZR Senior Fashion News Editor Marina Liao takes the trend for a spin this season, showing us three ways she’s embracing the many shades of gray. From looks that work for a Friday night out and Sunday afternoon brunch, to setting a beautiful table for a dinner party, there are endless opportunities to experiment with the trend. Using pieces all from Macy’s fall offering, Liao is giving both her wardrobe and her home decor an all-gray refresh. Muted but still impactful, this pared-down palette looks good on everyone — and everything.

Elevate The Everyday

For your everyday style, embracing the grayscale trend is simple. Look to cuts and styles that you love, but with a twist. Swap your blue jeans for a darker distressed pair, skip your white ribbed tank for a more elevated heather gray corset, and trade your classic leather jacket for a faux-suede moto coat in ash. “My fall style is comfortable, with a trend sprinkled in here or there,” Liao shares. Here, that comes in the form of a quilted crossbody and cool cut-out booties.

Set The Table In Style

Fashion and home have never been more intertwined, and Liao’s ability to translate the grayscale trend to her dining table is indicative of just that. With a stoneware dinner set as the foundation, she approaches the setting just like she does an outfit: with lots of layers and mixed materials. Varying textures — colored glass, pressed vinyl placemats, and lots of marble — create a look that’s both eye-catching and inviting.

Make It Monochromatic

“A fall trend that excites me is easy, but statement-making knits,” Liao says, noting this layered sweater-top look strikes the right balance between practical and playful. Styled with straight-leg jeans and combat boots, and topped with an embellished-button shirt jacket, the standard fall styling combination is completely reinvented. Plus, her go-to jewelry (cool safety pin-inspired earrings) adds a little bit of shine.
