King Charles was relaxed and in a “joyful” mood the night before the Queen died, suggesting that her death came as a “surprise”, according to his dinner companion Jenna Bush Hager, daughter of George W Bush.

Bush Hager, 40, was in Ayrshire for a long-planned interview for the US broadcaster NBC with the Queen Consort, who at the time was Duchess of Cornwall, which was called off abruptly the following day.

The former president’s daughter told NBC’s Today show that Charles appeared to have no inkling of his mother suffering from serious health problems when they met last Wednesday.
